Alexis Myers Wins Second Big Ten Freshman of the Week

NEWS

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Alexis Myers was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Thursday afternoon.

Myers finished in a tie for fifth place at the Boilermaker Spring Classic earlier this week, helping lift Illinois to its second consecutive victory at the event.

She tallied a 217 (+1) overall, with round scores of 72 (E), 75 (+3), and 70 (-2), one of just six golfers to post two or more rounds at or under par.

The Northbrook, Ill., native was tied with teammate Brielle Mapanao for the best scoring average on par 4s (4.03), and also tied Mariana Mesones of Minnesota for the best scoring average on par 5s (4.50).

Myers notched 11 birdies, also tied for the most during the two-day event. Four of those birdies along with an eagle came during the final round, elevating her four places on the leaderboard into fifth.

Her final round led all Illinois players, propelling the Orange and Blue to finish three strokes ahead of host Purdue for the team victory.

This marks the third weekly award for Myers, after she earned both Golfer and Freshman of the Week on September 18, the first time any athlete was selected for both awards in the same week.

The Fighting Illini return to action April 24-26, for the Big Ten Championships in Glendale, Calif.
