CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois soccer team (5-4-7, 2-4-4 Big Ten) defeated in-state rival Northwestern (5-9-3, 3-6-1 Big Ten), 3-2, on Thursday night in Demirjian Park.
Northwestern got on the board first in the 17th minute as the Illini trailed 1-0 to end the first half. Coming out of the locker room it was all Illini sparked by Kylie Marschall heading the equalizer in the 70th minute off a corner kick from Ashley Stellon.
The goal is Marschall's first as an Illini and the third for her career, her first since Oct. 6, 2024, against Florida State when she was playing for Virginia Tech. This is Stellon's second assist of the season and eighth of her career.
Gabriella Garcia-Terrell put the Illini in front two minutes later after she intercepted a goal kick on the top of the box and buried it in the bottom right corner for her second goal as an Illini. Hedda Ornberg added an insurance goal and the eventual game winner in the 83rd minute on a break away as Illinois went on to win, 3-2.
Izzy Lee made three saves today to give her 300 for her Illinois career, she's only the second Illini in school history to have 300 career stops (Leisha Alcia, 368). Illinois outshot Northwestern tonight 11-10.
The Orange and Blue return to action on Sunday (Oct. 25) for a road trip to No. 3 Ohio State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
