LINCOLN, Neb. – The Fighting Illini soccer team (4-4-7, 1-4-4 Big Ten) recorded a scoreless draw against Nebraska (3-3-9, 1-2-6 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon at Hibner Stadium. Izzy Lee made eight saves today and moved up to second all-time in the program's career saves list with 297.
The Western Springs, Ill. native and Second-Team All-Big Ten keeper passed Claire Wheatley who made 292 saves from 2013-16 and now only trails the program record of 368 set by Leisha Alcia in 2001-04. Today was Lee's eighth clean sheet of the season which leads the Big Ten and is the 23rd for her career. She's now one shutout away from tying Alcia for second in in the program's career shutouts leaderboard.
She made a pair of quick saves in the 12th minute diving to her right to stop a header and then again 30 seconds later to punch away a sure-fire goal off the Huskers deflection. She also broke up a break away in the 68th minute to keep the match scoreless. However, no save was more impactful than the one in the 89th minute to close out the match. She dove forward to close the gap on the Nebraska striker, but she managed to get a shot up over Lee, and Lee stuck her foot out the last second to make the stop and keep the match a scoreless draw.
Illinois returns to action at home on Thursday (Oct. 22) when in-state rival Northwestern travels down to Champaign. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on B1G+.
