EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a physical Top 10 road battle that featured 12 ties and 16 lead changes, the No. 5 Fighting Illini fell for the first time since mid-December, 85-82, in overtime to No. 10 Michigan State at Breslin Center.
The Fighting Illini (20-4, 11-2 B1G) led by as many as nine points early in the second half, but Michigan State (20-4, 10-3 B1G) climbed back to take its first lead of the second half with just 32 seconds to play, and held off the Illini, 14-11, in the extra period.
David Mirkovic led the Illini with 18 points, and dished out a career-high six assists to go with six rebounds in the contest. Junior G Andrej Stojakovic posted 17 points and seven rebounds, and Keaton Wagler added 16 points (14 in the second half) with six rebounds and three assists.
Tomislav Ivisic scored 12 points before fouling out of the game for the final 2:22 of the overtime period, while his twin brother Zvonimir Ivisic recorded a team-leading eight rebounds and three blocks.
The loss snapped the Illini's win streak at 12 and puts the Orange and Blue a half game behind No. 2 Michigan (21-1, 11-1 B1G) in the Big Ten regular season title race heading into the Wolverines' matchup Sunday at Ohio State.
Illinois returns to Champaign, playing host to the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday at State Farm Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on NBCSN and Peacock.
