COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Ethan Moczulski drilled a game-winning 26-yard field goal as time expired as Illinois went on the road to defeat Maryland, 20-17, on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Illini extended their winning streak to three games while securing their second straight walk-off win on the road against the Terps.
Illinois' game-winning drive saw the Orange and Blue march 67 yards on 13 plays over the final 5:45. The Illini defense dominated down the stretch, holding Maryland to three points and only 99 total yards of offense across the final 26:10 of game action.
Following a one-game absence, Katin Houser marked his return by orchestrating the final drive, totaling 223 passing yards and a touchdown. Collin Dixon hauled in six catches for 103 yards, while Hudson Clement caught five passes for 49 yards. Brayden Trimble brought down his first-career touchdown in the second quarter, and Kaden Feagin finished with two catches for 40 yards.
The Illini rushed for 184 yards as a team, led by a career-high 80 yards on the ground from Javari Barnett, who ran for a career-long 64-yard touchdown for his second score of the season. Aidan Laughery amassed 46 yards on his team-most 14 carries, while Jordan Anderson added 45 yards on nine carries, including a selfless 12-yard run that saw him take a knee inside the 5-yard line to set up the final field goal.
Trimble's first-career touchdown with less than one minute remaining in the second quarter saw the sides head into halftime tied at 7-7. The Illini defense tallied two first-half takeaways, including a forced fumble on the goal line by James Kreutz and a red-zone interception from Tanner Heckel.
After the Terps went back in front, the Illini accounted for the game's next 10 points to take their first lead of the day. Ethan Moczulski's 45-yard field goal cut into the deficit before Barnett broke free for a 64-yard touchdown rush on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Orange and Blue a 17-14 edge.
A Maryland field goal evened the contest at 17 with 10:16 remaining in regulation. Taking over at their own 26-yard line with 5:45 remaining, the Illini offense used 13 plays to move 67 yards down the field and set up the game-winning kick. A third-down conversion near midfield moved the chains before Dixon's 15-yard catch continued the drive. Four straight Anderson carries saw the Illini get into the red zone before Moczulski converted the kick from 26 yards as time expired to give the Orange and Blue the 20-17 victory.
Illinois (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) returns to Gies Memorial Stadium on Friday night for its Hail to the Blue Out against Nebraska. The contest under the lights in Champaign is set for 7 p.m. CT on FOX, with fans encouraged to wear blue. Limited tickets are available at fightingillini.com/tickets.

QUOTES
Head Coach Bret Bielema
Opening statement:
"We're super excited, not only for our players, but also for our support staff, everyone who hopped on the plane, and all the fans who traveled out here. Getting to 5-3 is exciting, and we have a great opportunity ahead of us this weekend with a Friday night game against Nebraska under the lights. We have a couple of special things planned from a uniform standpoint, so we're really excited to get to this point.'
'The way this team has persevered has been impressive. Nothing has come easy. I told the guys in the locker room afterward that, in my 18 years of doing this, one thing I've always appreciated is when you're a good football team, sometimes a certain phase doesn't play particularly well, but you're still able to win a football game. I really felt that was what we had to do today, especially coming out of the locker room at halftime. I can't say enough about our defense. For the most part, I thought they made Maryland earn everything. There were a couple of quarterback power plays and a power play off the edge that got us twice for touchdowns, but our guys did a really good job of resolving those issues. Their perseverance was outstanding, especially when we were going three-and-out on offense.'
'I also can't say enough about Katin Houser. I wasn't playing games with you guys when I promised Monday at the press conference that I didn't think there was any way he was going to play. He didn't do anything on Tuesday during practice. He did some individual work, but that was it. Then on Wednesday, he came to me and said, "Coach, I'd really like to try to play." I told him we'd see how things looked.'
'Obviously, with the way the game started, there was a defender coming right at him, and he took a hit a little high. But for him to persevere through all four quarters said a lot about him and our guys rallying around him. We had that first series where we got backed up, and there was just a lot going against us, but our guys showed great perseverance. I also want to give credit to Maryland. I was listening to their coach's press conference during the week. He's been a high school head coach, and he clearly has a great understanding of his football team. Those guys played extremely well. They did the things they said they were going to do during the week, and it showed up on the field. I expect them to win some games down the stretch.'
'We also had some really good situational football and awareness. When Maryland had three timeouts at the two-minute mark, I knew that if we got a first down, they would use two of those timeouts. If we got another first down, even if they still had one timeout remaining, we knew we could take the last shot. I was trying to make it a walk-off PAT. We were a little long, but I didn't want to put Katin under center because we had been having him take shotgun snaps. That's why that situation played out the way it did. To see Caleb Griffin here before the game and have things come full circle with this moment for Katin, who's been absolutely awesome this year, was really special to watch. It was a total team effort, and we're excited about the opportunity ahead of us."
On Katin Houser's injury and his return:
"Full transparency, I give a lot of credit to Josh and our administration. When we got out of the Michigan State game that night, I made a couple of calls to our medical people. If we had handled everything locally, we were probably looking at a four-to-six-week recovery, or potentially longer.'
'We had a couple of people reach out. I talked to his agent late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, and the same doctor who worked on the Oklahoma quarterback reached out. We got Katin on a plane immediately, and I believe he had surgery at 1 o'clock on Monday. That doctor told our people they thought he could be back in two weeks. I'm thinking, "What are you talking about?" But the technology we have today is unbelievable.'
'I was talking to that same agent, and he shared a story about a tight end we had recruited at Alabama who broke his arm and played that same week. The technology in today's world is incredible. I made it very clear to Katin, his representatives and his parents that we weren't expecting anything. We would move forward when he was comfortable and ready. I think he even surprised himself with how things progressed Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday, we didn't have him participating in practice. He threw during individual work, but that was it.'
'Wednesday morning, he said he wanted to practice. We had originally scripted practice with Carson and Michael, but Katin ended up taking a large majority of the first-team repetitions. I had never been more anxious for a Thursday morning practice. When you go to bed at night, you start thinking about whether there might be swelling or something else when you wake up. But he felt great, and Thursday looked awesome. He practiced through pretty much the entire script.'
'Barry also did some work with Clayton and Carson, but I give a lot of credit to Katin, as well as our play caller and offensive coaching staff, for being able to pull everything together."
On defensive coordinator Roger Cooper and the defensive staff:
"Coop is someone I've been very impressed with ever since I met him. He's kind of like dealing with a professor. He's very knowledgeable about what he does. Number 13 is a really good player for Maryland. On Tanner Heckel's interception, we created a bracket on that player. He fell down, which was a big part of the play, but Tanner knew where he needed to go and came up with a big play. There are still some things we need to continue to clean up, but I've really enjoyed this journey with Coop.'
'I've said it all along, but I also give a lot of credit to Archie, Corey and even Robby Hauck. I can't imagine what's going through Robbie's mind after everything he's been through with his dad. He's coaching those three safeties in the back end and has been absolutely outstanding.'
'It's a lot of fun to be around this group. I can't stress enough how much they've made my job easier over the last couple of weeks. Knowing we have stability there and people who can make adjustments has been important."
