After the Wildcats claimed the opening frame, 25-22, the Illini bounced back by taking the second set. With Northwestern ahead by two, Illinois used a 5-0 run to take a three-point edge. The visitors battled to tie the frame at 20, but a 5-2 Illini scoring stretch saw the home side take the set, 25-22, to even the contest at one set apiece.
Northwestern's 25-22 decision in the third set put the Illini behind in the match, but the Orange and Blue fought back by claiming the final two frames to secure the win. It was all Illinois early in the fourth set, jumping out to a 15-4 advantage before the media timeout. With the Illini ahead 23-10, the Wildcats accounted for the next five points, but kills from Aguayo and Miles saw the Illini claim the frame, 25-15, to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
The Orange and Blue carried their momentum into the final frame, opening the set on a 4-0 run, though the Wildcats answered with a 5-2 stretch to cut their deficit to one. After Illinois called a timeout with a one-point lead, the Illini dominated the rest of the way, closing the set on a 9-1 run to complete the victory.
