Champaign, Ill.- The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team welcomed Illinois State and Southern Illinois to the ARC Pool on Saturday, October 22. Illinois improved to 4-0 on the season, earning victories over both the Redbirds (200-81) and the Salukis (178-103).

"We did what we needed to do today to get the wins," said head coach Sue Novitsky. "You could tell that we were a little tired from last night. The final times might not have been as fast as they would have liked, but that is part of the process in learning how to recover from a physically and mentally challenging meet and be able to get yourself ready the next day. We need to keep working on fine-tuning that for the weeks to come.  Overall, the team showed great toughness, positive energy and a willingness to be aggressive and challenge themselves."

The Illini started fast, earning a first-place finish in the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay. The relay team of Jamie Kolar, Samantha Stratford, Megan Vuong and Kristin Anderson touched the wall first in a time of 1:46.28. Freshman Monica Guyett followed that performance by winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:18.08.

The next first-place finish for the Illini came in the 200 butterfly, when Gabbie Stecker finished in a time of 2:04.82. For the second straight day, freshman Kristin Anderson earned a top time for the Illini, finishing in a time of :24.33 in the 50 freestyle.

Illinois finished strong, earning first-place finishes in four of the final five events. Senior Amelia Schilling won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.87 and sophomore Megan Vuong finished with a time of :57.55 to win the 100 butterfly. Junior Samantha Stratford continued her success in the Orange and Blue, touching the wall first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:25.71. The relay team of Vuong, Anderson, Stecker and Rodawig concluded the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.17.
