CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois swim and dive will travel to the Tim Welsh Classic in South Bend, Indiana, hosted by Notre Dame, Jan 23.-24. Friday will feature two swim sessions, one beginning at 9 a.m. CT and a second beginning at 4 p.m. CT. Saturday's swim events will begin at 10 a.m. CT. The divers will compete on the three-meter at noon CT Friday, and the one-meter at 9:45 a.m. CT on Saturday. Results can be found on MeetMobile and Dive Meets.
Last time out, the Illini swimmers competed against Nebraska and Iowa at the ARC Pool, while the divers were in Iowa City, Iowa. Illinois fell in both dual meets but saw a host of strong performances, including a pair of individual wins from Chloe Diner in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.10) and 200 IM (2:01.79). Sophia Yousuf excelled, earning the tenth-best time in program history in the 100 IM (58.78).Â
Diver Elle Crisostomo placed in a tie for fourth on the three-meter boards (272.20), while freshman diver Amelia Semple made her Illinois debut, finishing fifth on platform with a score of 219.60.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Illinois, host Notre Dame, Indiana State and Akron will take part in the meet. The Illini competed against the Sycamores just over two months ago in Terre Haute, Indiana, emerging victorious by a score of 215-138. Against Indiana State and Vanderbilt, the Illini emerged victorious in 12 events, including a pair of individual wins for Sara Jass in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.46) and 400 IM (4:20.38).
Akron enters the weekend having won all but one meet as a team this season, most recently defeating Toledo, 209-52. Against Toledo, the Zips swept the top three times in the 1000 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and the 200 back.
Notre Dame last competed against Kentucky, narrowly falling to the Wildcats on the road, 158-141. The Irish had strong performances in the sprint events, with sophomore Hollie Widdows taking gold in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
