Diner Breaks 100 Breaststroke School Record, Leads Illini Swim and Dive to 5-0 Start

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois swim and dive team completed their first road meet of the season at Southern Illinois on Friday (Nov. 1). Freshman Chloe Diner shattered the 100 breaststroke program record in her second-place finish (1:01.59). She also swam the program's second-fastest 200 IM and NCAA B cut time of 1:59.18, and the fifth-fastest 200 breaststroke (2:14.30) en route to silver medals.  

Illinois improves to 5-0 on the year after they pick up wins today against Southern Illinois 157-143 and Illinois state 252-48. 

BETWEEN THE LANES

The 200 medley relay A team of senior Suvana Baskar, Diner, senior Logan Kuehne and freshman Isabella Wilhelm started the day off with a silver medal on the program's fifth-fastest time (1:40.25). The B team of freshmen Sophia Paduano and Kayla Duran, and seniors Sydney Stoll and Laurel Bludgen earned the bronze medal with the program's eighth-fastest time (1:40.67).

Duran later swam the program's second-fastest 100 breaststroke time in her third-place finish (1:01.82) while Paduano swam the program's fifth-fastest 200 backstroke in her third-place finish (1:59.81).

Illinois swept the podium on the 1000 freestyle led by freshman Kennedy Rainwater who clocked the program's 10th-fastest time in her win (10:09.15). Fellow freshman Taylor Judas placed second (10:14.83) and senior Paloma Canos Cervera placed third (10:14.94).

The Illini replicated this result in the 500 freestyle too led by sophomore Liv Dorshorst (4:58.97), Rainwater (4:58.97), Judas (5:02.92) and junior Adelaide Reaser (5:03.15).

Junior Alexis Wendel took the 200 butterfly crown (2:03.25). Stoll won the 100 butterfly (54.09) and earned silver in the 200 freestyle (1:49.39). The 400 freestyle relay team of Kuehne, senior Molly Yetter, freshman Marin McAndrew and Paduano ended the meet with a second-place finish (3:27.08).

ON THE BOARDS

Illinois divers won both the one-meter and three-meter board with sophomore Bethany Mercer taking the one-meter crown (245.85) and Dani O'Kelly taking the three-meter gold (267.95). O'Kelly also took silver in the one meter with a score of 245.30, while Mercer took fourth in the three meter (248.20). Sophomore Matilda Garcia placed second on the three meter (266.90) and fourth on the three meter (236.10).
