Illinois Swim and Dive Set to Take on Iowa, Notre Dame

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After a month of winter training, the Illini swimming and diving team travel to Iowa City, Iowa for the first meet of the decade against Iowa and Notre Dame.  Meet competition is set for 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

Last Time Out

Three Illini swimmers traveled to the Toyota U.S. Open Championships on Dec. 5-7 in Atlanta, Ga. Seniors Kristin Anderson, Jamie Kolar, and redshirt senior Aby Olson each competed in the preliminary rounds of their respected events on both days.

The Illini diving team visited Piscataway, N.J. for the three-day Rutgers Invitational, hosted by Rutgers on Dec. 4-7. Sophomore Taylor Shegos finished in first place in the preliminary round of the one-meter dive (301.35) on day one, marking a personal-best, and in the three-meter dive on day two (269.55).

Sophomore Madelyn Crosby set a season-high on day two of the invitational, after earning a score of 248.55 in the three-meter. Freshman Erin Young also set a season-best in the three-meter, recording a 228.35. Young was the lone Illini that competed in the platform dive, securing fifth place (171.60).

Scouting the Hawkeyes

Iowa enters the weekend with a 4-2 dual record on the season, including a 2-2 Big Ten record. Iowa earned victories over Big Ten foes Michigan State (183-113) and Rutgers (199-100). The Hawkeyes last competed on Dec. 13, defeating Iowa State, 179-121.

The Fighting Illini and the Hawkeyes will meet head-to-head for the 32nd time in program history. In the last seven meetings between the two teams, the Hawkeyes hold the series advantage, 5-2. The two teams last met on Jan. 11, 2019, as Iowa edged out a 157-143 victory over the Illini.

Scouting the Fighting Irish

Notre Dame holds a 3-3dual record on the season. The Fighting Irish final meet of 2019 was Nov. 9 against Pittsburgh, coming away with the 223-125 victory. Notre Dame also defeated Purdue (168-132) and Florida State (183.50-116.50).  

The Orange and Blue will go head-to-head with the Fighting Irish  for the 15th time in program history. Notre Dame holds a 11-3 lead in the series, as they got the 200-100 win over Illinois on Jan. 11, 2019.
