CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini women's gymnast Lizzy LeDuc will compete individually at the NCAA National Championships on April 15 at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Illinois will be represented at the national meet for the ninth year in a row.
LeDuc will do her floor routine during the third rotation of the 7 p.m. CT session along with the California women's gymnastics team and Iowa's Mollie Drenth.
Friday's semifinal competition will serve as the all-around and individual event finals. The all-around and individual event titles will be awarded to the competitors with the highest scores when the results from each of Friday's semifinals are combined.
LeDuc punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships by earning the floor title at the Salt Lake City Regional. The freshman produced a career high routine of 9.950, which surpassed her previous career best of 9.875, that ranks third in program history on the event. She is the first Illini freshman to qualify individually for the NCAA National Championships since Allison Buckley in 2008. The Dallas, Texas, native will compete in her home state for the first time during her collegiate career.
ILLINOIS HISTORY AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
LeDuc is the 14th Illini to qualify individually for nationals since the NCAA began sponsoring the event in 1982. Prior to 1982, when nationals were sponsored by the AIAW, Illinois had five individuals compete at the national meet. As a team, the Illini have qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2014, 2013, 2011 and 2009.
