
Hoerr Leads Illini to Ninth Place at Notre Dame Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Fighting Illini men's cross country team finished tied for ninth with Liberty University at the 52nd running of the Notre Dame Invitational with a team total of 246 points. In the loaded field of 23 teams, No. 13 ranked Notre Dame took the team title with 92 points, followed by No. 10 N.C. State (106 points) and No. 11 Providence (124) to round out the top three.
Senior Trent Hoerr took sixth place with an 8K time of 24:07. Hoerr's time places him sixth on the Illinois 8K distance record list, surpassing former Illini Wally Duffy. This is the second time in as many meets that Hoerr has made his mark in the record books. He now is third (23:54) and sixth (24:07) in the Illinois 8K record book.
Sophomore Jacob Nachel came in second for the Orange and Blue and 15th overall with a personal best time of 24:15.
"I think overall we ran a good, solid race," head coach Wendel McRaven said. "Trent had a solid showing and continues to confirm his place as one of the top guys in the sport. I was really pleased with the way Jacob (Nachel) stepped up for us and ran a great race."
Sophomore Jeremy Stevens, who made his season debut finished third for the Illini and 65th overall with a time of 25:03. Redshirt freshman Jared Richardson (25:13) and junior Tim Maier (25:21) rounded out the top-five Illini finishers coming in 78th and 82nd, respectively.
"I feel good about where we are at after today," McRaven said. "It's just a matter of closing the gap between our top two finishers and the rest of our squad and having guys step up like Jacob (Nachel) did today. I feel that we are headed in the right direction for the rest of the season."
In the men's open race, Sophomore Garrett Weaver came in 28th with a time of 27:09. Freshman Eric Johannigmeier ran a time of 27:15 to place 30th.
The Orange and Blue will take a week off before heading to Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. on Oct. 13th. A full recap and results can be found at fightingillini.com.
