The third-ranked Illinois wrestling team defended the school's first-ever Midlands title a year ago with a convincing team win, Thursday night, beating ninth-ranked Iowa and second-ranked Iowa State at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Illini used a championship win by 133-pounder Mark Jayne to clinch the title, Jayne's first Midlands title. Jayne was one of nine Illini to place at the tournament out of 10 weight classes.
"Winning the Midlands for a second year is a great accomplishment for our team," said head coach Mark Johnson. "We have now proved that our program is on par with the best in the nation. I do still believe that we have not quite wrestled up to our potential yet. We had good performances from a lot of wrestlers this tournament and that was the difference, but each guy can still improve quite a bit and that is something to look forward to. I am very excited for Mark (Jayne). He wrestled a great match against a wrestler who had great success in both college and in the freestyle circuit. He beat a very experience wrestler tonight."
Jayne (Sr., Elyria, Ohio) got a takedown with 20 seconds left in sudden victory overtime to defeat No. 3 seed Matt Azevedo of Sunkist Wrestling Club, 5-3, and win his first Midlands title. The win also gave the Illini the insurance points needed to secure the team win. Jayne gave up a takedown to Azevedo in the first period, with just 10 seconds left to fall behind 2-0. Azevedo added an escape in the second for a 3-0 lead heading into the final period. Jayne got on the board at the 1:21 mark of the third with an escape and with one second left on the clock got the needed takedown to send the match into overtime.
Tirapelle (Jr., Clovis, Calif.) was unable to defend his Midlands individual title as he dropped an 8-1 decision to the defending national champion Mat Gentry of Stanford. The two wrestlers entered the second period scoreless and Gentry scored first with an escape in the second. Tirapelle answered with an escape in the third for a 1-1 tie. In the third period Gentry exploded getting a takedown and five back points for the win.
Pete Friedl (Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) won a 5-2 decision over Daniel Waters of American University to take third place. Anton Dietzen (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill.) took fifth place at 149 pounds with a forfeit win over the tournament's second seed Mark DiSalvo of Central Michigan. Donny Reynolds (So., Frankfort, Ill.) lost a close match to No. 2 seeded Jared Frayer of Shultz Wrestling Club to place fourth. Tyrone Byrd (Jr., Clinton, Ill.) forfeited to Scott Barker of Oregon for sixth.
