The University of Illinois Swimming and Diving team moved to 2-0 on the season on Saturday by defeating the Illinois State Redbirds 149-94. Illinois was led by double-winners Kirsten Koepcke and Trisha Lakatos.

"Overall we had a lot of great competitive races," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We put them in situations where we knew they had to step up and compete and they did. It was terrific to see so many people step up, make changes and race with courage, intensity and focus."

In the 400 medley relay, the Illini nabbed the top three finishes posting a solid start to the meet. The group of Lakatos, Mallory Craft, Christina Brunka and Barbie Viney took first place honors finishing in 3:56.11. The Orange and Blue broke a pool record in the last event raced in the 200 free relay. The record setting team of Viney, Brunka, Rebecca Poetz and Megan Farrell stopped the watch at 1:36.33.

Koepcke, one of Illinois' two double-winners on the evening took the 200 free and 500 free in 1:56.26 and 5:07.08 respectively. Lakatos won the 200 IM in 2:13.38 and capped her night with a 2:24.41 time in the 200 breast. The freshman, Viney broke a pool record in the 100 free as she touched the wall in 51.19. Other winners included Rebecca Poetz (50 free) and Mallory Craft (200 back).

Sophomore Jackie Bain led the divers by placing third in the three-meter and fourth in the one-meter with scores of 204 and 208.49 respectively. Despite hitting the board in the three-meter on one dive, Abbey Bernardo wasn't far behind posting scores of 173.63 in the three-meter and 181.88 in the one-meter.

The divers will head to the UIC Diving Invitational tomorrow in Chicago. The diving competition begins at 10 a.m. The Illini swimmers won't hit the water until Friday, Nov. 5 when they travel to Ames, Iowa to face the Iowa State Cyclones.
