During the Great Depression, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Chicago agreed to meet for a "charity football bazaar" to be played at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field. It was four-team tournament format with the winners of the first games moving on to play each other in a "title" game.
Since a winner needed to be declared to played against the winner of the Iowa-Chicago game, it was decided that Indiana would advance on the fact the Hoosiers had eight first downs and the Illini just four.
Chicago defeated Iowa 7-0 in the second game. Indiana beat Chicago, 6-0, in the third and final game of the day. The first two games were abbreviated to just 30 minutes.
7,500 fans attended and yielded a net return of approximately $12,000 for charity.
Illinois claims the game as a tie since it was 0-0 and that a winner only needed to be declared to compete in the championship game. Indiana claims the victory since they moved on in the tournament.
