Champaign, Ill.– The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) will continue its three-decade partnership with Nike, agreeing to a 7-year contract extension with the industry leader in footwear, apparel, and sports equipment manufacturing. The contract is pending approval by the UI Board of Trustees at its September meeting.
Fighting Illini Athletics was one of the earliest college programs to have an exclusive all-school agreement with Nike, dating back to July 1995. There have been several extensions in the years since, highlighted by a department-wide 18-month rebranding process with Nike that launched in Spring 2014. The most recent contract was a 10-year deal signed in 2016.
This new agreement will ensure that every Illini team will wear Nike products, gear, uniforms, shoes, and specified equipment and accessories through June 30, 2033.
"We are pleased to extend our affiliation with Nike and keep our student-athletes outfitted in the Swoosh," Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman said. "We are proud of this longstanding relationship, which dates back more than 30 years and covers our 21 varsity teams and 450 student-athletes. Nike's values mirror our own, with an athletes-first focus and a commitment to innovation, competition, and success. This deal continues to strengthen the Illinois Athletics brand, which has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years. We are grateful to the team at Nike for their collaborative spirit, and we look forward to deepening and growing that relationship in the years ahead. Our student-athletes and coaches are excited to continue wearing Nike, and our fans can look forward to plenty of clothing and products available featuring the Block I and the Swoosh for years to come."
