CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois women's gymnastics head coach Josh Nilson announced on Friday the addition of Daniel Ungerecht as an assistant coach.
Ungerecht joins the Fighting Illini after serving as a Level 10 head coach at the World Champions Centre in Spring, Texas.
"I am beyond grateful to Josh and the University of Illinois for the opportunity to be part of the women's gymnastics program," Ungerecht said. "From the moment I stepped on campus, it was clear that Illinois is a special place. I'm excited to work alongside this great staff, invest in our athletes, and help build a championship culture. Let's get to work!"
While at World Champions Centre, Ungerecht was the lead coach for Level 10 athletes, helping prepare his gymnasts for NCAA and elite-level competition. In that role, he developed and implemented individualized training plans focused on skill progression and consistency and collaborated with families and NCAA coaches to support athlete recruitment and eligibility processes.
He also assisted with travel planning, meet scheduling, and compliance with USAG/NCAA safety protocols while cultivating a competitive yet supportive team environment that prioritizes academic excellence and mental resilience.
Prior to joining World Champions Centre in December 2024, Ungerecht was the program director and head coach at Rowland Ballard Gymnastics Academy in Atascocita, Texas, from 2017-23. During that time, he directed USAG Junior Olympic and Xcel competitive teams, working with athletes aged 6-18 while producing state and regional qualifiers and champions.
"Daniel is a hardworking coach who has coached for 16 years at the club level," Nilson said. "He has a passion for coaching and developing athletes the right way. He has a wealth of knowledge of the sport and has coached with and around some of the best coaches in the country. He will be a huge asset to our future success. I'm excited to welcome Daniel; his wife, Mallory; and their two daughters, Drew and Penny Jo, to the Illini famILLy!"
A native of Kingwood, Texas, Ungerecht earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lamar University in August 2023. He and his wife, Mallory, have two children, Drew and Penny Jo.
