Illinois Women’s Track and Field Finishes Second at Big Ten Indoor Championships

RECAP

Full Results
INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 1 women's and No. 18 men's track and field teams completed the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 28) from the Fall Creek Pavilion. The women's squad scored 93 points to finish in second place for the second-consecutive season.

"It's not the result we wanted but I'm still proud of this team," said director of track, field and cross country Petros Kyprianou. "We wanted to win the Big Ten title of course, but I still think the women did a great job fighting all weekend and earned second. I'm excited for our six Big Ten Champions we had this week in Sophia Beckmon, Meagan Humphries, Phethisang Makhethe, Viktor Morozov, Kennedy Ocansey and Rose Yeboah. That's our most combined champions at the indoor conference meet in 13 years which says a lot to what we are building here. The next one is the big one and we're going to come in with a bit of a chip on our shoulders as both the men and women left some points out there this week. I know we'll be ready to go and I can't wait to get to the national meet!"

Since 2024 the women's team has finished first in 2024, second in 2025 and second now at the Big Ten Indoor Championships which is their best three-year stretch in 30 years since the 1994-96 squads went second in 1994 and first in both 1995 and 1996.

Illinois' six Big Ten Champions this weekend (four women and two men) is their most combined at the indoor conference meet since 2013. The four women gold medalists are their most since the 2013 team had four individuals too and the men last had two Big Ten Indoor Champions in 2024.

Morozov claimed the event title in the triple jump when he sprung to a new facility record and the program's third-best mark at 16.38m (53-9). He's the first Orange and Blue man to win gold in the triple jump in 35 years since Aaron Mobarak last won in 1991. Additionally, he's the program's fourth individual to win the triple jump at the indoor conference meet.

Ocansey walked away the Big Ten Indoor Champion in the high jump when he matched his personal-best jump of 2.18m (7-1 3/4). He's the first Illini man to top the podium since Jonathan Wells did so in 2017 and he's the program's ninth individual to win gold indoors.

Jackson Gilbert sprinted to a bronze medal in the men's 400m finals as he clocked the school's second-fastest time (45.73) for his new personal best.

Sophia Beckmon captured bronze in the 60m with a new personal-best time of 7.31 which is the fourth-fastest time in school history. She led the women's team with 16 points scoring 10 yesterday in her long jump win and six more today with her bronze medal.

In the women's triple jump three Illini entered and all three of them scored. Mercy Honesty led the pack in fourth place with a mark of 13.32m (43-8 1/2), Katharina Graman placed fifth on a jump of 13.28m (43-7) and Romi Tamir finished in seventh place, 13.04m (42-9 1/2).

The women's 4x400m relay team of Jane Roosimagi, Grace Kombetto, Naomi Bey-Osborne and Ashley Oliver placed seventh on a time of 3:38.02.

Brenden Vanderpool stepped onto the pole vault podium in fifth place with his 5.43m (17-9 3/4) clearance. Gator Young finished in seventh place with the program's 10th-best vault, 5.33m (17-5 3/4). The men's team finished in seventh place with 43 points.
