IOWA CITY, Iowa --The Fighting Illini women's basketball team made its final nine attempts from 3-point range, but ultimately fell in a heartbreaker to #9/9 Iowa on the road Thursday, 82-78.
The Fighting Illini (19-9, 9-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Berry Wallace, who had 21 points. Cearah Parchment added her 12th double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Brown-Hagger helped out with 15+ points for the third time in the last four games and Aaliyah Guyton scored 11 points in her return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Illinois offense was in a groove from downtown, making 11 threes on 19 attempts. Both Wallace and Brown-Hagger hit three treys for the Fighting Illini in the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-0, Illinois went on a 9-0 run with 5:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Aaliyah Guyton, to narrow its deficit to 10-9. Iowa answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Fighting Illini down 20-17 following 10 minutes of play.
Illinois kept the Hawkeyes from increasing their lead before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by another three from Guyton, to take a 30-26 lead. The Hawkeyes then battled back to even it up at 35-35 heading into halftime. Illinois dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 18 points close to the basket.
After intermission, Iowa snatched a 41-39 lead before Illinois answered back by going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a trey from Wallace, to grab a 45-41 lead with 6:25 to go in the third. The Hawkeyes then rallied to tie it at 56-56 heading into the fourth quarter. Illinois knocked down all four 3-pointers it attempted in the quarter to score 12 of its 21 total points.
From there, Iowa snagged a 58-56 advantage before Illinois responded by going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Parchment's 3-pointer, to seize a 64-58 lead with 7:53 to go in the contest. Iowa surged from there, outscoring the Fighting Illini 24-14 the rest of the way to hand Illinois the 82-78 loss.Â
