Illini Show Grit at Home Against Maryland

RECAP

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Despite a series of standout individual performances and a season-high on the uneven bars, the Illinois women's gymnastics team fell to Maryland, 196.275–195.725, in a tightly contested Big Ten dual meet at Huff Hall on Sunday.

The Illini showcased their depth throughout the afternoon, highlighted by several milestone moments for the home squad. Leading the charge was sophomore Chloe Cho, who captured the all-around title with a 39.450. Cho's day was highlighted by a near-perfect 9.925 on the uneven bars and a consistent 9.900 on the floor exercise.

Illinois found its rhythm early on the uneven bars. Freshman Piper Gow delivered the most memorable moment of the rotation, sticking her landing to earn a career-high 9.800 in her debut on bars. Her performance served as a vital bridge in a lineup that also featured a stellar 9.900 from Lyden Saltness.

On vault, the Illini combined for a 48.900. Summer Clancy led the rotation with a 9.900 in her first 10.000 start value vault, while Alea Byrne and Rachel Goldstein provided steady contributions with identical scores of 9.725.

Illinois remained steady on the balance beam, posting a 48.900.

The floor exercise rotation was marked by a season debut of junior Olivia Coppola on the event. The team's 48.775 event total was lead by Chloe Cho (9.900) and Eden King (9.850).

"These ladies continue to get better every weekend. They have bought into trusting the process. We had some great performances tonight, from Summer was incredible on vault, Piper was lights out in her debut on bars. And of course, Lyden on bars and Chloe in the all around," Josh Nilson said.. "I am proud of this team. Even though it was a close loss, it was a huge step forward in comparison to our last home outing. Thank you to the fans for the support. The atmosphere in the arena was incredible today!"

The Fighting Illini will look to bounce back as they travel to take on Washington on Saturday, Feb. 7.
