Illinois Women’s Golf Wraps Up Successful Winter Slate

NEWS

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois women's golf concluded a successful winter break competition schedule last week, capped off by a first-place finish from Anna Ritter at the 93rd Ione D. Jones / Doherty Women's Amateur Championship. After marching through the first four rounds of match play, Ritter defeated Florida native Gabriella Albert, 4&3, taking the lead on the first hole and never looking back.

"The Jones Doherty was a match play event, and it was really cool to compete head-to-head against other collegiate players that our team competes with in college events," said Ritter.

"My short game helped me stay in many of the holes throughout because when it seemed I was out of position, I was able to win by hitting solid shots. I'm looking forward to using my experiences over break to build momentum with my team this spring."

In December, Ritter also finished in a tie for third at the 2025 Next Tee Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida, alongside signee Lisa Copeland. Both women carded a three-round total of 214 (-2).

At the Cactus Collegiate Challenge in Goodyear, Arizona, another pair of Illini golfers took the course, Tavia Burgess and Sofia Vargas. Vargas recorded a 222 (+6) to tie for seventh out of 57 golfers. Her second-round total of 70 was the best of any golfer in the field. Burgess notched a 226 (+10) to tie for 17th place.
