Illini Post Five Total Wins at Battle In The Bay

RECAP

SAN FRANCISCO – Adam Jilly and Kenta Miyoshi concluded their time at Battle In The Bay in San Francisco, combining for four singles and a doubles victory during the four-day event.

Miyoshi advanced to the singles main draw, while Jilly tallied the first singles and doubles wins of his collegiate career.

Day 1

After Jilly and Miyoshi fell in the opening round of the men's double main draw to Stanford's No. 2-seeded and No. 16-ranked Nicholas Godsick/Hudson Rivera, 8-5, the Illini shifted focus to singles play.

Miyoshi took care of business in his first-round match against Cal's Lenn Luemkemann in three sets. The Illini senior secured the opening frame, 6-4, before falling in the second-set tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Breaking twice in the third set, Miyoshi claimed the final five games en route to the 6-1 third-set decision to advance to the second round of the singles main draw.

In his first collegiate singles match, Jilly forced No. 2-seeded and No. 7 Ozan Baris of Michigan State to three sets though ultimately fell to the Spartan senior. Jilly took the opening frame, 6-4, behind a break in the third game, though Baris bounced back by breaking for the first time in the fourth game of the second set. Overcoming an early break in the third set, Jilly broke back in the sixth game before going up a break following the eighth game. Baris then secured the final four games to win the set and the match.

Day 2

Jilly and Miyoshi secured their first doubles win of the fall, posting a 6-3 decision over Cal's Bernardo Munk Mesa/Lenn Luemkemann in the opening round of the doubles consolation bracket.

In singles play, Miyoshi recorded a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Texas' Lucas Marionneau, who was the No. 12-ranked newcomer in the ITA preseason rankings. The Longhorn freshman broke in the fourth game of the opening frame, though Miyoshi responded with a break of his own in the seventh game. The Japan native's break in the 11th game proved the difference in the opening set, and breaks in the first, fifth, and seventh games of the second frame sealed the straight-set win for Miyoshi.

Advancing to the quarterfinals, Miyoshi claimed another efficient two-set triumph, never dropping serve or facing a break point en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Boise State's Filip Soderqvist. The Illini set the tone early with breaks in the first and third games to go ahead, 4-1, and another break in the seventh game sealed the opening frame, 6-1. With the score knotted at 3-3 in the second set, Miyoshi broke in the eighth game before serving out the match to progress to Saturday's singles semifinals.

In the consolation bracket, Jilly picked up his first collegiate singles win, taking down No. 118 Jelani Sarr of Arizona State in three sets. The Illinois freshman used a break in the seventh game of the opening frame to take the set, 6-4, though the Sun Devil junior bounced back to force a third set. In the 10-point superbreaker in the final frame, Jilly used three straight points to turn a one-point lead into an 8-4 advantage, ultimately serving out the match to move on to the consolation quarterfinals.

Day 3

The Illini opened the day with a 7-5 doubles defeat to San Diego's Stian Klaassen/Adrien Berrut.

Miyoshi then fell to TCU's No. 106 Duncan Chan in the singles main draw semifinals, while Adam Jilly wrapped up his time in San Francisco with a 7-6(3), 7-6(0) loss to San Diego's Adrien Berrut.
