LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 23 Illinois women's gymnastics team finished in third place at the Big Five meet with a score of 196.825, picking up two wins over Penn State and Maryland and two losses against No. 5 Michigan and No. 20 Iowa.Â
"The team owned their gymnastics right out of the gate," said head coach Nadalie Walsh. "Amelia Knight set the tone on beam and from then on, the team was fired up. We still have even more to give and will bring this fire to Huff Hall Monday against Michigan State!"
The Illini started the night on beam where Mia Takekawa picked up the highest team score with a 9.900. Ruthuja Nataraj and Amelia Knight both earned a 9.875, with Nataraj tying her career-high. Mallory Mizuki and Abby Mueller both scored a 9.85 with Mia Townes securing a 9.725.Â
Moving onto floor, Kadyn Fitzgibbon locked the top spot with a 9.875 in her first performance in the lineup. Mueller, Takekawa, Townes and Nataraj were right behind her with a 9.85.Â
Julia Waight was the highest scoring Illini on vault with a 9.875, with Mueller securing a 9.85. Fitzgibbon tied her career-high with a sold 9.825. Townes and Makayla Green rounded out the scores with a 9.775 and 9.75, respectively.Â
Illinois ended the night on bars with Kaitlyn Ewald securing the top team score with a 9.875. Rachel Borden and Olivia O'Donnell took the next top score with a 9.825 followed by Mizuki and Takekawa scoring a 9.8.Â
Mueller was the sole Illini in the all-around, finishing the meet with a 39.200.Â
The Orange and Blue will be back in action on Monday with their rescheduled meet against Michigan State in Huff Hall at 6 p.m. This meet will be the Dare to Dream meet, celebrating people's goals and dreams.Â
