Meet Notes

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 4 Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team is set to take their first road trip of the season, traveling to University Park to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Illini are coming off a 402.550-396.250 over Ohio State last Saturday at Huff Hall. The win moved the Illini to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in B1G competition.

Illinois and Ohio State were the only teams to compete last week in the B1G, and the win put the Illini on top in conference play.

After the second week of competition, the Illini moved down one spot to no. 4 in the nation in team total, trailing Ohio State, Michigan and Oklahoma at the top. The Illini rank in the top five as a team in all events, including third on vault, parallel bar, and high bar.

The meet will take place on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 PM CT. The meet will be broadcasted on BTN+, and live stat information is TBA.

LAST TIME OUT

Last Saturday afternoon, the Illini opened their B1G competition season with a 402.550-396.250 win over Ohio State. The Illini claimed four event titles and the all-around title in the win, including the all-around and parallel bars titles from junior Hamish Carter. Sophomore Evan Manivong continued to dominate the vault, setting a new career-high 14.750 and taking the event title.

SCOUTING PENN STATE

The last time the Illini faced Penn State was last season on Mar. 7, a 406.900-402.200 win in the tri-meet vs Penn State and Michigan. All time, the Illini are 43-59 against the Nittany Lions. In their first meet of the season, Penn State defeated Army 383.650-355.200 in a virtual meet on Jan. 16. Penn State was ranked no. 4 going into B1G play, and senior Alex Frack and junior Nick Mock were named B1G Gymnasts to Watch.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Fighting Illini's next scheduled matchup as a team is Feb. 13 at Iowa due to the home matchup against Michigan on Feb 7 being postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Michigan Athletics program.
