EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 23 Fighting Illini women's gymnastics team saw half its beam lineup record a 9.900 in the final rotation Sunday, but it was not enough in a 196.150-195.775 loss to Michigan State. Illinois' beam score of 49.400 was its highest on any event in a meet this season and tied the second-highest beam score in team history.
Karen Howell, Kylie Noonan, and Shaylah Scott each hit a 9.900 on beam Sunday to earn a three-way share of the beam title. The effort came up just short, however, as the Spartans recorded their second-highest team score of the season.
"There were quite a few standout moments today," head coach Nadalie Walsh said. "The entire beam team fully stepped into their identity and destiny and crushed that event... I thought the team recovered extremely well from a slow start to bars. There we a handful of mistakes we had to count but we plan to leave those errors here and show up for Big 5 on point!"
Nicole Biondi earned her first career vault title with a season-high score of 9.850. Arayah Simons earned a split of the floor title with a score of 9.850.
The Orange and Blue are back in action Friday at the Elevate the Stage Big Five meet in Toledo, Ohio.
