CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 23 Fighting Illini earned their second win in as many home meets Friday in a 195.900-194.850 decision over Western Michigan at Huff Hall. The home squad earned six event titles, as senior Karen Howell won the all-around crown with a season-high 39.325, as well as titles on bars (9.900) and beam (9.850).
"I'm just very proud of them," head coach Nadalie Walsh said. "I think they worked through the adversity we had a few weeks ago. They let their roots grow down deep, so that we can withstand any future adversity, and tonight things didn't go completely our way, but they didn't get down. They finished the meet and did a great job."
Freshman Mia Townes and sophomore Shaylah Scott earned a split of the vault title with matching scores of 9.800. Howell's 9.900 on bars was a season high, as was her 9.850 on beam. Scott set a career high with a 9.925 on floor to earn the title on that event.Â
