Illini Dominate Newly-Formed Indiana State Team

Final Results

Champaign, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team dominated from start to finish on Saturday, November 5, on its way to a 184-77 win over Indiana State. With the victory, the Illini move to 6-1 on the season.

"It was nice to get a win on the road," said head coach Sue Novitsky. "Indiana State competed really well and has a very strong future as a program. I was pleased to see the team step up and compete in some different events. We trained hard this week and they were pretty tired and sore, but overall they were able to ignore their discomfort and get to the next wall."

There were no weak spots for Illinois, as the team earned first-place finishes in 13 of the 14 events. The relay team of Kolar, Serniute, Vuong and Anderson got things started for the Illini, finishing first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:55.34. Freshman Emily Martin followed up that performance with a strong showing in the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall first in a time of 10:33.74.

Four different Illini swimmers won multiple events on the day, including senior Amelia Schilling, senior Audrey Rodawig, junior Ashley Aegerter and sophomore Gabriele Serniute.

Schilling finished first in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM with times of 52.92 and 4:30.55, respectively. In the third event of the meet, the 200 freestyle, Rodawig touched the wall first in a time of 1:53.65. The Champaign native also earned a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:06.83).

Junior Ashley Aegerter swam strong in the 200 butterfly, finishing first in a time of 2:09.48. Aegerter also touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:22.09. Sophomore Gabriele Serniute won both the 100 breaststroke (1:06.13) and 100 butterfly (58.59).

Other first-place finishes included redshirt Freshman Aby Olson in the 100 backstroke (59.30), sophomore Megan Vuong in the 50 freestyle (24.11) and the relay team of Bethke, Meyers, Anderson and Rodawig in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.41).
