UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The fifth-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team came up short in a 436.050-431.150 battle with No. 7 Penn State in University Park, Pa. this Saturday.

" This result was completely unexpected with the way we've been building in practice," said head coach Justin Spring. "We are a better team than this, but didn't show it today."

The Illini started the afternoon on floor with a team score of 73.100, paced by Chandler Eggleston, who took the title with a 15.550, setting a personal best. C.J. Maestas followed in second with a score of 15.300.

In the second rotation, the Orange and Blue posted a 71.550 on pommel horse and claimed two of the top four spots. Matt Foster took his second horse title of the season with a personal best of 14.800. Cole Smith placed fourth with a solid 14.600, a season high for him.

The Illini also took first and fourth on rings with a team score of 73.400. Maestas earned his fifth rings title (15.300) and was followed by Mike Wilner in fourth with a 14.900.

In the following rotation, Illinois scored a total of 72.600 on vault, taking three of the top five spots. Eggleston came in second with a 15.050, Fred Hartville in third with a 14.900, and Maestas finished in fifth with 14.550.

On parallel bars, Illinois scored 71.450 as a team. Jordan Vadez set a season best in second place with a score of 15.000. Maestas was the other Illini to place in the top five, taking fifth with a 14.250.

Chandler Eggleston was the only Illini to place in the top five on high bar, taking home third place with a 14.500. As a team, the Illini scored 69.050 on the high bar.

C.J. Maestas took home his third all-around title of the season, scoring 87.050.

The Illini look to build back momentum next week, when select gymnasts travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Winter Cup on Feb. 20.
