Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the third edition of the new season, senior Nancy Featherstone recaps the team's trip to Wisconsin and the Badger Invitational.
This past weekend we made the trek to Maureen Liddy country (aka Wisconsin) to play in the Badger Invitational. Along with myself, five freshmen consisting of Hailey Koschmann, Nora Lucas, Sammi Sloan, Katie Dilger, and Kaitlyn Wampler made the trip. They were all excited to get out of the dorms for a weekend and sleep in a bed bigger than a twin, have a bathroom in their rooms, sleep in air- conditioning, take a break from dorm food, and of course play golf!
It was really fun spending more time with the freshmen this week, and I have to say I definitely learned more about them. For example, I quickly learned at 2 o'clock in the morning that Hailey TALKS IN HER SLEEP!! So yea, that was fun. So that was a little tidbit of the freshmen class, I'll leave other stories for you to read about in future chip shots.
With the exception of a little bit of a chilly morning for the final round, we had really great weather to play golf in this weekend. The course was in really great shape too. The highlight of the weekend definitely had to be Hailey firing a 69 in the opening round of the tournament, and Sammi carding the second low round of the day with a 73 on Sunday. Everyone else had some good rounds here and there, but now we are working some kinks out and will be ready to put together some solid scores at the Windy City Classic this coming weekend! At practice this week, we played without our woods to learn to play for par and let birdies happen rather than forcing them to happen. It also made us realize that distance isn't always the most important factor.
So this weekend we are traveling to Northwestern, which is practically in Nora's backyard. If you are in the area, we would love for you to come out and watch us!
Go Illini.
Nancy
