East Lansing, Mich. - The Illinois women's swimming and diving team got off to a good start in opening the 2004-05 season with an exhibition meet against Michigan St. Saturday at the IM West Outdoor Pool.
The Orange and Blue featured a pair of double-winners with senior Kirsten Koepcke and Barbie Viney. Koepcke captured the 400 free with a time of 4:44.89 and then grabbed the 800 free event in 9:36.49. As for Viney, she took home the 200 free touching the wall in 2:10.58 and then won the 100 free in 1:00.29.
"Swimming outside and having the pre-game football activities going made for a fun environment," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "I think today gave us an idea of what we need to continue to work on, but I think for everyone it feels good to have the season finally underway and start competing against other teams."
The Illini swept the 200 IM and leading the way was freshman Meghan Bradley winning her first collegiate event in a time of 2:34.25. Finishing second through fourth for the Illini in the 200 IM were sophomores Jessica Rothenberg, Michelle Grandcolas and junior Kathryn Easey.
