The third-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team stayed undefeated for the year with a 24-13 win over the Indiana Hoosiers, Saturday evening in Bloomington. The Illini won seven of 10 matches to improve to 9-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big Ten. Top-ranked Alex Tirapelle got his 23rd win this season to remain unbe?ten at 157 pounds, while junior Brian Glynn moved to No. 23 on the school's all-time win list with his 70th career victory.
The match began at 157 pounds with a 10-2 major decision win for No. 1 Tirapelle (So., Clovis, Calif.) over Matt Cooper of Indiana. Tirapelle scored five points in the third period and racked up 2:37 of riding time in the win to get the Illini on the board with four team points. Senior Ben Hay (Sandwich, Ill.) dominated his 165-pound match with a 14-4 major decision over Nate McMillin. It took almost two minutes for the first takedown, but Hay took off from there with five more takedowns in the final two periods and 3:02 in riding time. In the 174 pound match, 12th-ranked Brady Richardson of Indiana came out shooting with a takedown in the first five seconds against No. 8 Pete Friedl (So., Orland Park, Ill.) to take a 2-0 lead. With an escape and then a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the first period, Friedl took a 3-2 lead, which he cushioned with a takedown in the third for the 6-4 final score.
With the Illini leading 11-0, fourth-ranked Brian Glynn (Orland Park, Ill.) won with a 10-4 decision over Andy Rios at 184 pounds. Glynn recorded 3:20 of riding time in the match where he got four takedowns and gave up no offensive points until a reversal was awarded to Rios in the final second of the third period. With the win, Glynn won his 70th career match to move to 23rd on the Illinois all-time win list.
The dual took a Hoosier turn as the Illini lost their first match of the day in a close 5-2 decision of 10th-ranked Pat DeGain over redshirt-freshman Matt Weight (Batavia, Ill.). Indiana then got a huge upset win as unranked Josh Buuck reversed ninth-ranked Mike Behnke onto his back in the second period getting the win by fall in 4:13 to make the team score 14-9.
The Illini got back in control with a controversial overtime win at 125 pounds where third-ranked Kyle Ott (So., Huber Heights, Ohio) got the 6-4 sudden victory decision over 14th-ranked Joe Dubuque. Dubuque got the first takedown in the first, but Ott got back on top with an escape, takedown and back points to lead 5-2. However, Indiana scored on a reversal to make the score 5-4 after one period. Dubuque got an escape in the second and Ott an escape in the third, but Indiana's riding time made the score 6-6 after regulation. At the :39 second mark of the sudden victory overtime period, Ott got a takedown with Dubuque's back exposed, but the match was called before a pin could be attempted. The win gave Illinois a 17-9 team lead with three matches remaining.
At 133 pounds, sixth-ranked Mark Jayne (Jr., Elyria, Ohio) increased Illinois' team lead with a 13-5 major decision over Nick Spatola. He got five takedowns in the match, including four in the third period to score the bonus points. Seventh-ranked Coyte Cooper was too much for redshirt-freshman Michael Martin (Norfolk, Va.) as he lost a 15-6 major decision at 141 pounds. Junior Anton Dietzen (Elmhurst, Ill.) got his first Big Ten win of the season with a dominant 10-3 decision over Cameron Sakon to ensure the Illini team victory.
The Illini will be back in action tomorrow as the third-ranked squad heads to Evanston, Ill., for a 2 p.m. CT matchup against in-state rival Northwestern.
