
Williams, Kapernekas Compete at NCAA Regionals

Columbia, Mo. - A pair of Fighting Illini gymnasts competed in the all-around at the 2003 NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Columbia, Mo. on Saturday. Sophomore Ashley Williams, making her second consecutive regional appearance, scored a 38.450 to place 18th in the all-around. Junior Kara Kapernekas, in her first trip to the regional meet, finished 20th with a score of 37.725.
Williams, a Northport, Ala. native, had solid performances on both the uneven bars and the floor exercise. She earned a 9.85 on the bars to finish in 9th place, and turned in a score of 9.800 on floor to take 22nd place. Kapernekas, meanwhile, performed well on the uneven bars and the balance beam. The Westchester, Ill. native posted a 9.700 on bars to finish in 31st place and a 9.725 on beam to take 22nd.
UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher won the all-around title with a score of 39.750, including a perfect 10.0 on the floor exercise. The top-ranked Bruins won the meet with a total score of 197.700 and will advance to the NCAA Championships along with No. 13 Iowa, who finished second with a score of 195.875. The Hawkeyes just barely edged out Oregon State by .025 for the second qualifying spot.
