
Illinois Finishes West Coast Trip On A Good Note

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The second-raqnked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team wrapped up its West Coast Tour on the campus of UC-Santa Barbara in a quad meet against No. 7 Cal, No. 11 Stanford and host UCSB. Illinois won the meet with a team total of 213.625. Cal scored a 212.000 for second, followed by Stanford (206.675) and UCSB (203.700). Teh Illini are now 16-2 overall.
"We had good meets both today and on Thursday at UCLA," said head coach Yoshi Hayasaki. "We performed what we have been training. We need to work on our consistancy. We were close today, but we're still not there yet."
After having a bye in the first rotation of the meet, Illinois began its first rotation on the floor. Sophomore Bob Rogers took third on the with an 8.90. Fellow sophomore Scott Wetterling placed sixth, scoring an 8.7.
The pommel horse team took five of the top 10 places as the team scored a 35.900. Senior Jonathan Plante took the individual title with a 9.55. Rogers finished fourth with an 8.90 while Wetterling received an 8.75 for sixth. Freshmen Ben Newman and Peter Shostchuk tied for seventh with scores of 8.70.
Not to be outdone, the rings competitors scored 36.800 and took six places. Senior J.G. Ketchen led the group with a 9.375, placing second. Illinois held fourth through eighth placees. Senior Sean-Paul Crawford (9.275), redshirt-freshman John Cano (9.10), Plante (9.05), junior Nathan Torres (8.95) and Wetterling (8.85) finished fourth through eighth, respectively. Wetterling's score did not count for the team rtings score because he was competing as an exhibitionist for his all-around score.
Wetterling vaulted a 9.45 to win the event and lead the vault team to a 36.00 event score. Ketchen placed fourth with a 9.20. PLante placed third for the highest finishing Illini on pommel horse with an 8.50. Wetterling (8.45), Ketchen (8.40), and Crawford (8.35) also placed in the top ten 0 Rounding out the day, the Illini scored a 36.375 on high bar. Ketchen tied for first with a 9.525, Wetterling (9.05) and Seward (8.95) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
Wetterling scored 53.350 in the all-around to take second place, behind Cal's Codt Moore, who scored an 54.600.
Illinois returns to action as they travel to Iowas on Saturday, March 2.
