Men's Cross Country Cruises At Pre-Regional Meet

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Illinois hosted a pre-regional meet this morning at the UI Blue Golf Course in Savoy. The men cruised to victory with 29 points and had 10 of the top 17 finishers in the race. The closest opponent was Eastern Illinois, who came in a distant second with 52 points.
Senior Scott McClennan (Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill), won the race with a personal best of 24:37.03 over the 8-K distance. McClennan has now led the Illini in the last eight meets he has participated in, dating back to the 1998 season.
"Scott is having an excellent season," head coach Gary Wieneke said. "He's running with confidence and gains more every day and with each race. His workouts and his races keep moving him up the ladder."
"I felt pretty strong today," McClennan said. "After 5-K I put on a little surge and pulled away." But it wasn't just McClennan in command at the meet. Instead, it was another impressive team effort which allowed the Illini to dominate the competition. Senior Ryan Eason (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South) placed second for the Illini and fifth overall with a time of 25:05.49, a new personal best. But the records did not end there. Justin Mitchell (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) finished fourth for UI with a time of 25:26.31, which shattered his collegiate best by 24 seconds. Freshman Tim Moran (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), Illinois' fifth scorer, recorded his personal best with a time of 25:34.69.
"We really competed hard today top to bottom," Wieneke said. "We had a lot of personal bests. Our scoring spread was less than a minute, and that's including Scott up front. We want to push as many guys up near Scott as possible. The expectations continue to rise for this team every week."
Illinois has an open date next weekend.
